Pattern Design + Construction :
I love creating adorable animal patterns! This easy fox cozy works up quickly and is the perfect mug companion. It’s beginner-friendly, using just a few basic stitches, and can be customized to fit your favorite mug (see adjustment instructions in the coffee sleeve base pattern below).
The Crochet Fox Cozy features a base crocheted in rows to form a flat rectangle. The ears are attached to the base, and the nose is stitched on with a tapestry needle. The cozy is then seamed together. When flat, the finished cozy measures approximately 4″ tall by 4″ wide.
- Yarn:
- For my Crochet Fox Cozy design, I chose medium (4) worsted weight yarn. I prefer this yarn for coffee sleeves because it is versatile and durable. You can substitute any other worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.
- For this tutorial, I’m using the following yarn colors:
- I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Burnt Pumpkin
- Yarn Bee Yarn ID, Medium 4, 5 oz / 252 yd, in the color Oats
- Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black
- Additional Crochet Supplies:
- Size G (6) Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle / Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- Stitch Markers
- Stitches:
- Chain
- SC – Single Crochet
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
- DC – Double Crochet
- TC – Triple Crochet (often referred to as treble crochet)
At the end of the row, chain 1 and secure with a long tail.
Weave in and trim the cream yarn tails from the ears on the back side of the coffee cozy.
- Invisible Seam:
- Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (the better side of the ears on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
- Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch or a simple back-and-forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won’t pull apart when stretched over the mug.
- Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.
- Trim any excess yarn.
- Turn the cozy right side out.
- *You can certainly add the nose and eyes before seaming up the cozy, but I prefer to add them afterward so I can see exactly how they will look once completed.*

- Crochet Fox Nose:
- With black yarn:
- Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 4, pull tight (4 stitches)
- Slip stitch into the first SC and tie off with a long tail.
- Using a yarn needle, stitch the nose onto the coffee cozy, centered between the ears, where the cream and orange yarn rows meet.
- Tie off on the inside and trim any excess yarn.
- Crochet Fox Eyes:
- Using a tapestry needle and black yarn, stitch two cute semicircle eyes above the nose. The semicircle should resemble a wide capital letter V that isn’t too tight, so it curves.
- Tie off on the inside and trim any excess yarn.
